10 COMMANDMENTS FOR PURCHASING CUSTOM GOLF CLUBS
1. LOFT
Always buy the MOST LOFTED driver suited to your swing speed. Do not assume because a touring pro can hit a 9½* lofted driver that you can – cuz you can’t – trust me, you can’t! Most recreational golfers that swing 95 MPH need around a 11½ * loft – women who swing at 60-65 need a 14-15* loft. The return/used club rack at many golf stores are jam packed with 7½- 8½-9½ * clubs. Do the math!
2. STEEL VS. GRAPHITE
Unless you are a scratch golfer, get rid of those STEEL shafts and get GRAPHITE! The steel will make your clubs 20% heavier. Heavier means slower swing speed. Slower swing speed means less distance. Loft is your friend.
3. FLEX
Use the MOST FLEXIBLE shaft that you can control and the most expensive graphite shaft you can afford. Do not have a testosterone attack and insist on a stiff or extra stiff shaft cause it makes you feel manly ( . . . and that is what all your buds hit . . . ) – cuz you won’t golf manly. While we’re on the subject of shafts, remember that no golf club company makes shafts (they “job” them out), and the “flex” of a club doesn’t transfer from one shaft manufacturer to another. What is stiff in one manufacturer may be “regular” in another. It all depends on your swing speed.
4. LIE
Have your “LIE” checked. This is one of the most important elements of getting custom clubs, but the most over looked. If you constantly hit to the right or left with your irons, it may because of your irons – not you! If you are hitting older clubs make sure you get the “LOFT” checked also. After hitting your clubs on Mother Earth for several years, the lofts of your irons may have changed giving you “over lapping lofts” or “gaps” in your lofts – THIS IS A BAD THING.
5. LOFT, AGAIN
Make SURE that you don’t have OVERLAPPING LOFTS which is like having a 5 iron that hits farther than a 4 iron, or a 5W that hits farther than a 3W – it happens all the time and creates “gaps” in your ability to go a specific distance.
6. HYBRIDS
STRONGLY consider replacing your 3, 4 and maybe your 5 iron with a hybrid. They are much easier to hit and are becoming very visible on the pro tour. You will enjoy the game of golf much more.
7. GRIPS
Get a GRIP! Change your grips when they start to show wear. Use the same grip on ALL of your clubs, including your putter. If all the clubs feel the same, you will have more confidence. This tip will save you 4-5 strokes.
8. SWING WEIGHTING / MOI MATCHING
Get your clubs swing weighted or MOI matched. This is like getting all the same grips. You want you clubs to feel all the same when you pick them up - no new experiences! 9. PUREING AND FREQUENCY MATCHING
Use frequency matched and PUREd (http://www.sstpure.com/faq.htm). shafts in yours irons. This is like having balanced tires and good shocks in your car.
10. PROFESSIONAL CLUB FITTING AND CLUBMAKING
Always use a CUSTOM CLUBFITTER AND CLUBMAKER. You will always get a better club (including head, shaft & grip) at a better price. You wouldn’t buy a $500 suit off the rack without having it fitted – so why buy a $1000 worth of golf clubs (or more) and HOPE that they fit? When your professional club fitter or clubmaker makes a recommendation, listen to it!
BONUS
Read In Search of the Perfect Club by Tom Wishon. This $16.00 “something” book will confirm many of the things that I have been saying. Read it. If you are ready to invest a $1,000 or so into custom clubs, this book is well worth the investment. I do not agree with everything that he says, but I agree with 99% of it!
